Island Glades was plantation land in the 1960s, that was slowly transformed into the residential neighbourhood that it now is. It hence stands as one of the oldest developments on the island of Penang, and is still popular to this day for its central location with new development mushrooming up on its outskirts wherever there is available land. There were attempts to rename this area as Taman Mutiara in the early 1980s, but the name never caught on.
