Green Lane is in actuality not really a township in Penang, it is more of a major road which residential and commercial developments have sprung up on its sides. It is however a major suburb, where two of Penang’s most prominent schools, Penang Free School and Convent Green Lane are located.

As atypical as it is in a historical state like Penang, Green Lane came into existence in the early 1900s. It was originally a small farming community, which later became a major road due to its nature. Green Lane stretches from Jelutong Road to the Air Itam Road, and provides great accessibility to motorists.

Green Lane is now more of a busy commercial area more than anything else. Aside from its two landmark schools, it now also hosts the Chung Hwa Confucian High School. The Lam Wah Ee Hospital and the newer Tropicana Medical Centre is also located here, and the local hypermarket; Tesco Jelutong; is also here. Green Lane is also host to several holy institutions such as the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit, Trinity Methodist Church, Wat Pinbang-Onn and Wat Nai. The latter two are Thai Buddhist temples.

Green Lane is also otherwise known as Jalan Masjid Negeri, which none of the locals refer to it as such. It is a major trunk road in itself, and provides connectivity to Jalan Yap Chor Ee and the main highway of Lebuhraya Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu. Residents of Green Lane hence have easy access to Gelugor.

Green Lane is served by the local bus service, Rapid Penang. Busses number 103 and and 206 pass through Green Lane, of which the former goes to Batu Ferringhi and the Penang International Airport, while the latter goes to Komtar and the Tesco hypermarket in Jelutong. Anticipated to have an increase in traffic due to the development of the second Penang Bridge south of the island completed in September 2013, Green Lane was widened.

The convenience of their location provides them access to the Penang Bridge in only 10 minutes, while due to their centrality, Georgetown is only 20 minutes away. The Penang International Airport is equally as near at approximately 20 minutes away, while the Penang mainland is also only about 20 minutes away.
