Kota Tinggi, Johor, is an inland town located to the northeast of Johor Bahru. It is also called Kota Bersejarah (translated as historical city) due to its prestige as the place where the Johor Sultanate was established in the 1500s, after Melaka fell to the Portuguese.

Today, history buffs and visitors to Kota Tinggi can tour attractions like the two-storey Muzium Kota Tinggi, and royal tombs like the Sultan Mahmud Mangkat Dijulang Mausoleum, Makam Tauhid and Makam Bendahara Tun Habab (Habib).

For those who prefer outdoor activities, there are the Kota Tinggi Waterfalls about 20 minutes away from the town centre, the Kota Tinggi Firefly Park and Firefly Valley Leisure Park, in addition to beaches and fishing villages like Desaru, Teluk Sengat and Tanjung Balau.

Residents in Kota Tinggi have quite a few options to choose from when it comes to schools: SK Taman Kota Jaya, SMK Taman Kota Jaya, SK Laksamana Kota Tinggi, SK Datuk Usman Awang, SMK Bandar Kota Tinggi, SRA Bersepadu Kerajaan Johor Kota Kecil, SMA Kota Tinggi, SM Teknik Kota Tinggi and a vocational college.

Other basic amenities in Kota Tinggi consist of a local court, police station, fire station, post office, suraus, eateries, and banks. There are also a few supermarkets and malls located in the town of Kota Tinggi: Econsave Daiman Jaya, the Heritage Mall, KIP Mart Kota Tinggi and Plaza Kota Tinggi, while Hospital Kota Tinggi caters for emergencies and bigger medical issues.

However, it is important for tourists to note that during the monsoon season (from October to around March), Kota Tinggi is particularly susceptible to flooding. In fact, its 2006-2007 flood submerged much of the town for days, and as recent as 2017, the town once again made the news for its heavy rains and floods. It is not advisable to travel to the waterfalls and rivers of Kota Tinggi during this season.

Getting to Kota Tinggi via car is fairly easy, as the Federal Route 3 connects it with state capital cities like Johor Bahru, Kuantan and Kuala Terengganu. Buses arrive in the Kota Tinggi Bus Terminal, right in the centre of the town’s commercial zone, but train services are non-existent in Kota Tinggi.
