Segamat, in northern Johor, is a district situated over 170km or 2.5 hours away from the state capital of Johor Bahru. There are many job opportunities in the district, especially in the agricultural and industrial sector. Developments like Bandar IOI Segamat help to meet the resulting demand for residential properties.

Segamat’s commercial activity revolves around the trunk road and both sides of Sungai Segamat. The first, and the older of the two, is the area to the north of the river. It encompasses the Segamat train station, post office, Pejabat Pendidikan Daerah Segamat (district education department), Pejabat Penerangan Daerah Segamat (district information department) and Dataran Segamat.

The 1 Segamat shopping complex, which was completed in 2012, is also on this side of the river. Inside, there is a Lotus Five Star cinema and Giant hypermarket, among other amenities. Just a year before that, KIP Mart Segamat was opened with a homey community market for groceries, as well as various retail outlets like a Mr D.I.Y. hardware store.

To the south of the river, you’ll find even more amenities, including hip eateries, supermarkets, the fire station, several banks including Affin Bank, Bank Islam, Bank Rakyat and CIMB Bank, shops, car showrooms, petrol stations and Hospital Segamat, which serves the community of the entire Segamat district and its towns. Various government buildings are here too, like a magistrate court and Jabatan Pengangkutan Jalan Segamat (road transport department).

Residents will appreciate the many schools built in the Segamat town – Malay-medium primary and secondary national schools, Chinese-medium schools, religious schools, technical schools, and even a community college.

For tertiary education, there is also the 50-acre Johor Bahru campus of Tunku Abdul Rahman University College (TARC), located just about 20 minutes or 16km from the Segamat town. It is known for its business, internet technology and hospitality management courses.

The road network of Segamat is relatively easy to navigate. Traffic is manageable due to routes like the Segamat Inner Ring Road, which diverts heavy traffic away from the trunk road especially during special occasions. Jalan Sultan (or Federal Route 23) joins the main road, leading to towns like Muar in the southeast of Segamat, about 80km away, while the Federal Route 1 gets you to places like Yong Peng and Batu Pahat.
