The Pretty & Ugly Side of KLCC

Kuala Lumpur is the Golden Triangle of Malaysia, home to everything thrillingly new and intoxicatingly exciting. From the most expensive homes in the country of Malaysia touting RM3,000 psf at Binjai On The Park where you can watch the New Year fireworks up and close at Suria KLCC from your very own living room. Or luxuriate in your very own personal rooftop infinity pool overlooking the Petronas Twin Towers; right down to the first ever condominium in Malaysia, Desa Kudalari, placed within the heartbeat of the country.

Kuala Lumpur’s city centre is the place where everything happens, from the most frightening corruptions in the back lanes of the city, to some of the country’s biggest tourist spots such as Petaling Street and Central Market; followed closely by some of the best food from all nationalities in hidden alleys and some of the country’s hottest clubbing spots at Jalan Changkat. And so everyone thinks they know all about our beautiful country.

But what happens in the back lanes of the city away from prying eyes? And how do highly popular streets in the day turn to seedy dens of vices in the night? What really happens behind the glamours of the multimillion dollar properties all touting prime locations and views of the country’s very own twin towers?

VS.

Chow Kit used to be one of the most popular red light district in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, just as every country has such an area. Chow Kit is however old news in the market with nothing much to excite the senses anymore; except maybe for a couple of really good food stalls and the Chow Kit market. Touting many old buildings worth a minimum of RM2,100,000 in the market for a shophouse, this is an area that is now said to host the lower tier of growth relation officers.

That being said, the Editor decided to check out a couple of the latest and more popular hotspots of vices that are known mostly only to the locals - for the heck of it.

A “low cost” low-rise flat in Jalan Alor costs RM580,000 for just one unit, and units available are usually very quickly snapped up by property hunters looking for good investment in the area. This being said, Jalan Alor is the new popular place to go to in Kuala Lumpur for gastronomical fixes for all sorts of appetite. Read that however you want. For the cuisines offered here are only the best of local food and delicacies, while up the street are a number of places to relax after dinner with massage parlours offering a variety of “full body services”.

The scene offered at Jalan Alor is however still very tame as compared to the absolutely fascinating and scintillating scenes at one of the more famous and hottest streets in Kuala Lumpur. Lounging casually in the heart of Kuala Lumpur just a short drive away from the famous Double Tree Hilton Hotel is one of Kuala Lumpur’s best kept secrets at Jalan Gelang. The daytime sees this area as a seedy, gone-to-the-dumps area, with many low cost apartments that are not in the market for sale. These homes tout mould-ridden walls and dirty back lanes.

However, the night scenes first start with the East Club opening for business and flashing their gaudy lights.

At 2 a.m, enterprising young girls start making their appearances.
And at 3 a.m, the girls are said to come out in full force.

According to a veteran of the industry, these friendly girls are scattered all over the city of Kuala Lumpur; you just need to know where to find them. As an experienced “cheongster” once mentioned, “My friend and I have a theory, that any massage parlour which has the picture of a foot out front with neon lights surrounding it offer “extra” services”. A short drive down to the seedier parts of the Kuala Lumpur City Centre by the author could almost confirm this as a fact, as she saw innumerous of these signs in the city centre at the above mentioned places; and interestingly, massage parlours such as these can be seen all around the busier parts of Kuala Lumpur at night.

And these are just the few that are more open to the public. In the Chinese philosophy there is the yin and yang, a balance in everything, and for every good there is as much bad. And for a city such as Kuala Lumpur oozing with wealth and glory, just imagine what else lies on the other side.

Well, perhaps due to the lucrative location and "wealth and glory", people are willing to turn a blind eye on what they know goes on after midnight, just to have a place in KL. It is a prime address after all, and one that everyone is familiar with. Big city, big expectations, etc etc.
