There’s a saying that you need to eat breakfast like a king as it’s the most significant meal of the day. Not only does it provide a boost in nutrients to keep us healthy, the first meal also gives us energy to face our day.

To help you eat like royalty without spending too much, we compiled a list of the best breakfast spots in Cheras frequented by locals. Their signature dishes include roast duck, Malaysia’s traditional Nasi Lemak, Hainanese chicken rice, different varieties of noodles, and even Shawarma.

I. STAGE Café

Located along Jalan Temenggung 29/9 in Bandar Mahkota Cheras, this café is among the best places to have breakfast in Cheras thanks to its exquisite coffee and exceptional food, including desserts.

Apart from being presented elegantly, you’ll definitely notice that their dishes are made with passion. For instance, you can be forgiven for showing off on Instagram their platter of omelette, sunny side up eggs, ham slices with fresh tomatoes and greens. It’s just so mouth-watering and beautiful!

Not only is their coffee topped with creative latte art, their freshly baked cakes feels like heaven. Try their blueberry tart and fluffy Friendship Cake consisting of a Jasmine Tea Chiffon Cake with thick coffee caramel sauce. The only downside is that there are often many people eager to get in and there’s limited seating.

II. Warong Kaklong

Our national dish, Nasi lemak, has been a staple breakfast for many Malaysians. It has also been named by TIME Magazine as one of the world’s 10 healthiest breakfasts. So it’s definitely a superb food to start your day.

At Warong Kaklong in Bandar Tun Hussein Onn, you can purchase Nasi lemak wrapped in banana leaves for merely RM0.50 each. That’s super affordable! However, the packet only comes with fragrant coconut rice topped with fried peanuts, sambal and a small slice of egg. If you want to add crunchy fried chicken, you need to fork out an additional RM3 – still a very affordable price.

III. Sun Ming Charcoal Roast Restaurant

Another nutritious breakfast you can have is roasted duck. Compared to chicken which is considered white meat, duck is red lean meat, so it has higher amounts of iron. It’s also a good source of zinc and selenium, both of which promotes healthy cellular metabolism.

At Sun Ming Restaurant in Taman Connaught, the highlight of their menu is their perfectly roasted ducks. The fowl is so flavourful that there’s often crowds lining up for it. However, the charcoal roasted duck is slightly expensive as a quarter costs RM20. Nevertheless, its taste is certainly worth the price. Apart from the piece de resistance, the eatery also serves Chinese roasted pork belly (Siew Yoke) and Chinese barbecued pork (Char Siew).

IV. Weng Onn Chicken Rice Shop

Drop by at this stall along Lorong Durian in Taman Cheras if you’re on the hunt for affordable Hainanese chicken rice. In fact, a plate of the said dish with Char Siew is only priced at RM6.50, making it one of the places that serve the cheapest chicken rice in all of Cheras. Apart from the low price, the chicken is so yummy and its skin literally melts in your mouth.

Besides their signature dish, another popular choice of dish here is their freshly cooked Kampung Asam Fish (RM6). Their sliced chicken gizzards (RM2) also has a unique chewy taste, while one bowl of the appetising pig offal soup (RM6) can easily feed two to three individuals.

V. Yulek Wan Tan Mee

Adjacent to the aforementioned chicken rice stall is Yulek Wan Tan Mee, which is reputed to serve the most delicious Wonton noodles (Wan Tan Mee) in town. It’s so yummy even if you order take out and ate it several hours later. However, be prepared to face crowds as the restaurant is popular among locals as well.

Each serving of noodles comes with a small bowl of soup with three pork dumplings. The noodles are springy and coated with rich dark sauce. You can also choose the toppings for the noodles, including succulent Char Siew and crisp Siew Yuk as well as braised pork ribs and chicken feet. Moreover, you can add side dishes like fried Wontons and shrimp dumplings (Sui Kow).

VI. Green Lane Noodles

Another hearty noodle for breakfast is white Curry Mee. While it’s not easy finding a good place that serves the Penang dish, this restaurant along Jalan Dato Haji Harun in Taman Taynton View has earned a reputation for their superb Curry Mee (RM7.50), which you’ll keep coming back for more after tasting it for the first time.

The aromatic white coconutty broth transforms into a vibrant red when a spoon of sambal is dissolved. The curry liquid tastes sweet and savoury. Swimming in the broth are vermicelli and yellow egg noodles, providing different textures. It’s also topped with pork blood cubes and fresh cockles that hasn’t been overcooked. Moreover, the eatery serves other popular dishes in Penang, like Kuey Teow Soup and Prawn Mee.

VII. Kui Lum Noodle House

This eatery along Lorong Lobak in Taman Cheras is frequently crowded in the morning due to its scrumptious pork noodles. As a matter of fact, the place is often packed by 9am, and there’s already a line 30 minutes later.

Their menu is extensive, as you can order pork noodles with a wide assortment of toppings. These include pork meatballs, minced pork, pig ears, liver, kidney, and intestines. You also have the option to add vegetables, egg with a runny yolk, and crisp pork lard that will remain crunchy even when soaked in the soup. In terms of taste, the noodles are terrific, while the broth is not too thick. The latter has a nice taste from herbs and spices as well as the pork bones boiled for a long time.

VIII. Madam Chiam Curry Noodle House

Don’t be fooled by the name of this place along Jalan Cerdik in Taman Connaught. Although their curry noodles and curry Laksa just alright, the huge number of people coming to this place mainly order their outstanding Pan Mee.

A bowl of this culinary delight is composed of delicate springy noodles topped with crispy anchovies, minced pork, dried shrimps rich in umami flavour, half-boiled runny egg, ample chili flakes and a wedge of zesty lime. A word of advice if you’re coming by yourself or in small groups -- be prepared to share tables with strangers as the staff doesn’t allow small cliques to hog a table to themselves.

IX. Poppo Kanteen

Apart from being an excellent dinner spot, Poppo Kanteen along Jalan Manis 4 in Taman Bukit Segar is also a good place for breakfast or brunch thanks to its exceptionally good Nasi Lemak.

However, be prepared to pay a bit more as their version comes with more proteins. Apart from the hard-boiled egg, it features crispy chicken leg and thigh, in addition to curries of your choice – chicken or mutton. You can also opt for the super tender beef rendang and other side dishes. It’s best to go to this place when you’re extremely hungry as their portions are rather generous, which is more than enough to sate your empty stomach.

X. Shawarma Restaurant

Located near UCSI University in Taman Connaught, this establishment has earned a reputation for serving the best Middle Eastern food in Cheras, possibly even in Klang Valley. It is also a popular hangout spot for tourists.

True to its name, the restaurant’s most notable dish is its Shawarma, which is made from premium meat, be it chicken, beef or lamb. The meats are perfectly roasted in a slow-rotating rotisserie. The end product is juicy pieces of meat infused with a smoky flavour, and pairs well with their in-house Arabic chilli sauce. Apart from their signature dish, patrons praise their succulent chicken and lamb kebabs.
