A house is a space that you will likely spend most of your time in. Whether you like to lounge on the living room sofa or whip up new recipes in the kitchen, each room in a house serves different needs. Certain rooms are generally considered more important than others. These are typically the ones that are used the most and have the greatest impact on the household’s overall quality of life.

Whether you’re looking for a new place to move into or you're thinking of selling or renting out, it’s best to know what rooms to prioritise in your home. We ran a survey to ask home-buyers what the 5 most important rooms in a home are and here are their answers.

1. Kitchen (29.76% Votes)

The kitchen is the heart of the home and is where families usually spend a large amount of time cooking, eating, and socialising. It has the tools needed to fuel the household every day. Most survey respondents say the kitchen is the most important room in the house because they need to cook often. One said that a good kitchen is important to lift one’s mood while preparing meals.

Before selecting a home, buyers and renters should pay close attention to the layout, size, and condition of the kitchen. It should have enough counter space and storage, and be equipped with modern appliances and fixtures.

2. Living Room (22.62% Votes)

The living room is another essential room in a house. This is where families gather to watch television, spend time together, and entertain guests. A spacious and well-designed living room can make a home feel more inviting and comfortable. Survey respondents who voted this room said that their families spend the most time in the living room.

The size and layout of the living room should be appropriate for the size of your family and the way you plan to use the space. If you invite guests over frequently, you may want a larger space.

3. Bedroom (21.43% Votes)

Bedrooms are the most personal and private spaces in the home, where people relax and sleep. They provide a place where people can retreat from the outside world. Survey respondents commented that a good bedroom is important for quality sleep, which is crucial for maintaining physical and mental health.

You should ensure that the bedroom is large enough to comfortably fit a bed, dresser, and other furniture, and that it has enough space for you to move around easily. Additionally, you should check for noise level, especially if it's facing a busy street. It’s best to avoid noisy bedrooms or equip it with soundproof insulation.

4. Master Bathroom (20.24% Votes)

Having a bathroom is a basic necessity. It is where you shower, bathe, get ready for the day, and more. Most people, including our survey respondents, use the master bathroom as a much-needed private space to relax and unwind after a long day. You can do this with features such as a soaking tub or spa-like shower.

A well-designed master bathroom can increase the overall value and desirability of a home, making it an important consideration when selling a home.

5. Utility Room (5.95% Votes)

The utility room is often used for storage of household items and/or laundry appliances. In some cases, this room is where the electrical panel is located which controls the power in the house. While people don’t prioritise the utility room as much as the four others above, it is still crucial in order to avoid clutter and maximise space.

Having a dedicated storage area can make it easier to find items when they are needed, rather than having to search through multiple rooms or closets. It’s worth noting that some houses don’t offer a utility room.

Ideally, every room in your house should have the layout, furniture, and fixtures that let you carry out your daily routine seamlessly.
