Bukit Mertajam is one of the main towns within the central region of Seberang Perai, on mainland Penang. The area had hailed its name after the hill which sits northeast to it, that was itself, named after a type of tree known as Mertajam.
In its early days, Bukit Mertajam was a settling spot for Chinese farmers who worked the land for agricultural produce, with many of them being of Teochew and Hakka descent. There were also many Malay settlements to begin with, while Indian settlers came in later on, brought by the British. The area also saw one of the largest influx of Catholic pilgrims in the country, further diversifying the demographics and leaving their architectural marks to this day. Due to this, a large part of the Bukit Mertajam population today are Chinese and Malays while there is also a fair dispersal of Indians.
Throughout the years, Bukit Mertajam has gone through a rapid process of urbanization due to the development of industrial estates on the mainland, which saw a boom in population as more and more people settled down in those areas to live and work. To accommodate the growing population, many housing projects were developed and built, with much of those being lower-medium to medium cost apartments and landed homes affordable to the working community.
In recent years, residential developments in Bukit Mertajam have begun to go in a different direction to cater to a large part of the population who have stabilised and are looking to owning their own properties. The soaring prices of land and homes on the island have also prompted developers to come up with landed properties on the mainland with relatively affordable prices to appeal to Penangites on the island to move to the mainland. This direction is still clear with future developments like Permatang Sanctuary, BM Highland, and the luxurious Sunway Wellesley to be carried out in the region. There have also been a rise in condominium developments with many more to be expected in the coming years, such as The Retreat Condominium.
Hence, amenities like banks, eateries, petrol stations, and more are numerous and widely available. Schools around the area include SMK Convent Bukit Mertajam and SMK Bukit Mertajam while markets such as the Pasar Awam Kampung Baru Bukit Mertajam provide the community with their grocery shopping needs. There is also a fair share of retail and shopping outlets such as AEON Mall, Mydin Mall, Perda City Mall and The Summit Bukit Mertajam Plaza.
Accessibility wise, the Butterworth Outer Ring Road links Bukit Mertajam to Butterworth and other parts of Seberang Perai along the way. Bukit Mertajam is also just minutes away from the first Penang bridge via the North South Expressway (PLUS), which also enables travel to the other states of Peninsular Malaysia, such as Kedah and Perlis to the north and southern regions like Ipoh, Selangor, and even Johor. The Butterworth - Kulim Expressway which leads eastward is also within close proximity to the area.
